Very exciting news in Bilge Ebiri´s new interview with the master: www.vulture.com/article/brian-de-palma-on-the-body-double-ending-and-his-new-film.htmlWhile it´s obvioulsy unknown if this film comes to realization - De Palma has unfortunately been connected to about 20 films that fell through over the past couple decades. But it is still fun to speculate! So what is this project, you think? Catch and Kill (formerly known as Predator)? This would be my preference. Sweet Vengeance?Toyer? The Demolished Man? Is De Palma doing a Coppola? This would be exciting. Something else he´s been connected to? A project we haven´t heard about? What would be your favorite project? And what do you think the man is working on?

I am wondering if it might be SWEET VENGEANCE, as it seems like that one had gotten close enough before to actual production, that De Palma had already planned out some drone shots and Alcaine had mentioned he was working on it, too.

Yes, maybe the smart money is on Vengeance? If I was a betting man, it would probably have decent odds. Good point about Alcane.
Personally, I’m really hoping for Catch and Kill (I read yesterday about a wild twist in the script , did you see that?) - but I’ll take anything. I keep thinking it’s quite likely to be something completely new also..

I'd be fine if it was either one. But for some reason, I don't think it will be either. It sounds like he's planning for it to be his last. Which is a little sad, but also exciting. So...I think he'll want it to be extra special. I'm thinking one of his originals (like Blow Out or Femme Fatale).

Having said that, TOYER always sounded intriguing to me...especially with him directing.
I'd love the idea of BDP casting Anya Taylor-Joy in a major role. For some reason I can just see it.

I’m not confident this will amount to anything. It would be nice if De Palma’s many successful friends and acolytes pooled in to pay for a swan song project. DOMINO was an embarrassment, not that it was a bad movie, but it definitely felt underfunded. His New Hollywood peers Scorsese, Spielberg, Schrader, Coppola*, and Lucas have all had tremendous successes late in their careers. They’ve all also made terrible movies that are far less entertaining than De Palma’s worst.
He has a lot going against him. There’s a rumor he can’t get insured to direct because of health issues, and lately he hasn’t looked too great. He doesn’t have a regular crew, he has to shoot on film and there aren’t a lot of those people left. He considers himself someone who designs experiences for public consumption in a group setting. He doesn’t want to develop a project for streaming TV. THE BLACK DAHLIA is a great film imho, but people laughed at it. Today’s audiences are even more out of touch with his cinema literate, satirical style.
It would be nice if he made an unrestrained political film, like he did at the beginning of his career. He’s always moaning how the kids have the ability to make films now for next to nothing, he should make on himself. Surely he could design a clever set piece to be shot on iphones.
*I’ve yet to see MEGALOPOLIS, but even if it is unwatchable, getting to make the movie you want to make, with the stars you want to work, and the finances to pay for it yourself, and get it into theaters, at 85 years old, makes him the most successful one of them all.

Yes, and how about Adam Driver and Nic Cage? The latter and De Palma got along great and were supposed to do Mr. Hughes after Snake Eyes.

Alcane/Pankow/Donaggio,etc. Although, I might want a different composer for this one.. And I’m pretty sure Domino was shot digitally. As far as the insurance: maybe he has lost weight? I don’t think he’s been photogaphed in public since the receiving the Hampton Award in….. Wait, that was in 2019??? Man, is that the last tome we saw him publicly? (There was that one screenshot from his zoom call on his 80th birthday but that’s all I can think of). He should have a back-up director ready to step in should anything happen. His close friends Baumbach, Koepp, maybe even Speilberg or Greta Gerwig??As far as the audience being out of touch - that is certainly true - but on the other hand I don’t give a shit as long as we get one more hahah

I know Keopp was really proud of the Hughes script and heartbroken they never made it. Not sure about this insurance issue. If De Palma thinks he's ready to go, he must feel well enough. He certainly still seems mentally lucid. I assume he'll have some investor like he did with Femme Fatale or Passion. Probably won't be too big a budget. This might go the way of Ambrose Chapel and others, but I choose to be optimistic.

Anything close to Passion would be great! Domino felt incomplete and aside from a couple of set pieces, it did not feel like a De Palma's film, like some scenes were directed by someone else, with some cringy dialogue! Although it would not affect the masterful legacy he left in cinema, I would like to see his swansong be much better than Domino Unlikely, he can do a big project like Megalopolis, as far as I know, he is not rich like Francis, with wine factories. I would be thrilled, pun intended, if he could make one more of the things only he can do, erotic thriller

I have a feeling that if the project does end up getting off the ground that it will be CATCH AND KILL, which I would be quite okay with. I often wish that George Lucas would step up and fund one final "Brian De Palma" film, where he is given the budget and time to make a film exactly as he wants to. Surely Lucas could afford such a thing, with all that Star Wars money, to give his friend a fitting cinematic send-off.

It is disappointing and sad to see his "friends" abandoned the cinematic collegiality/musketeers spirit they had in the 70s, "All for Cinema" banner. Both Lucas and Spielberg could finance his projects, like a breeze. Aren't they happy more art is being produced by their generation?

Who knows, but I don´t think they are as close as they used to be. De Palma said that was why got the new group together (Baumbach, Paltrow, Wes Anderson).
Even Brian himself should be worth $50-100 million, so he could do like Costner and part-finance himself. At least if we are talking about a moderate budget of ~ 30- 40 million. Perhaps that’s why he sold off one of his New York-appartments? After all, that was likely the most valuable of the two, and appeared to have kept his "office" apartment.

The one thing I hope is that his last film be operatic!

The one thing I hope is that his last film be operatic! Oh, absolutely! But we are nearing two months without any news - I do hope we hear something soon
