Hi! This website is for the De Palma Aficionados  How did your interest for De Palma begin? Personally I saw Carlito's Way when I was 16 years old. As I left the theater I though it was nice, but not that exceptional. But as the days passed, the images from the movie would not leave me. I went back to the theater to see it again. The images in that movie are as effective as those of a dream. Snake Eyes was the first film I ever avaited feverishly, and since then every new De Palma film was an event for me. I must idmit I have been a bit dissapointed with the last two movies, but I am very curious about PASSION... |

I saw several DePalma films before realizing they were DePalma films. But late one night when I was 15 I saw Sisters on TV. I had no idea what the hell it was, but it grabbed me from the very start and never let go. That clanging Bernard Hermann score, the freaky opening credits, the dark humor, the unique style and the overall bizarreness of it all captured me in a way I had never seen or felt before. When I discovered it was an early DePalma film and I connected the dots to other films of his I had seen and liked, it set me off on a journey to see all of his films. I became hooked ever since!
Also, I really liked The Black Dahlia a lot and thought its critical reception was somewhat shocking. I've only seen Redacted once and would like to see it again. It has some great stuff in it though I thought it was a bit of a poor man's Casualties of War, so I wasn't enthralled by it. I expect Passion to blow me away!

Hi!
I saw a few De Palma films on TV and VHS growing up. Mostly his more mainstream stuff, like Mission: Impossible, The Untouchables, Snake Eyes... By the time I started developing my love for movies, and found out De Palma was the director of those movies, I realized I liked his style very much. I then started to investigate his older titles, and then Mission to Mars was the first I saw on the big screen (I was 17 at the time). I became a fan for life.
And I pretty much loved everything he released on the last decade, so Passion is being highly anticipated around here.

It's interesting. The reaction to Passion in Venice was largely negative. The reaction to it in Toronto was mixed, some negative some quite positive. Now the film is coming to the New York Film Festival and while it has screened publicly yet, the film was screened for press and critics and the reaction has been pretty positive from what I can tell. I'm sure there were detractors, but there's mostly positive signs coming out of it. From what I can tell, it's a true DePalma film that fans will love and non-fans will hate. That works for me!

Sounds great. I spoke to Geoff about the reaction at NYTT, and seemed to mirror your comments.
Can you offer some more insight into the reception in New York? Has the Times, Village Voice, NYPress etc. reviewed it?

Well, the first De Palma film I ever saw was Carrie, and I must have been around five years old. I loved it then, even though it terrified me, and it has since become my all-time favorite movie. I believe the next De Palma film I saw was Dressed to Kill, and it was several years later. I was intrigued by the combination of sleaze and class that De Palma brought to that film. And then I was able to see Sisters and I loved that as well. At that point, whenever I found a De Palma thriller at the store, it was mine! haha

Carlito's Way was probably the film where I really started to notice De Palma. I actually remember watching Carrie as a teenager and absolutely hating it. I now think that it probably just made me too scared. When I started to watch De Palma films as De Palma films I fell in love with Carrie and I think it's probably his best. I also remember watching Dressed to Kill with my father and feeling quite uncomfortable during some of the scenes. Carlito's Way is still my favourite. I love Carrie, Blowout, Femme Fatale, The Untouchables and Raising Cain(another one I hated the first time around). I still haven't watched them all. I just bought Sisters and Obsession on DVD and I'm waiting for the right moment to watch. And I'm so looking forward to Passion.

I saw "Carrie" on television at Christmas about thirty years ago and although it was an odd choice on my mother's part for family viewing, it stayed in my head for ages afterwards. Not just the locker room scenes, although they made quite an impression on this twelve year old, but the relationship between Carrie and her mother and the bucket of blood scene. I didn't realise who directed it until I saw "The Untouchables" at the cinema and started to read about De Palma. After that, I watched every film I could find and my favourite soon became - and remains - "Dressed to Kill".

Hello! Brian De Palma is my favorite director. It all started back in the late 70's when I saw PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE on television when I was 8 or 9 and couldn't look away. The film really made an impression on me. I also had seen BLOW OUT on TV when I was young and it also stayed with me. At the time I didn't really pay attention to who directed what but all these films that I really liked through the years...CARRIE, BODY DOUBLE, SCARFACE were all directed by the same guy. By the time I put all the pieces together this was about 1995 and I really dove into his back catolog and have come to love everything. Of course he is a master of his craft and really uses film in such interesting ways, visually telling stories. There is also something else that I can't quite put my finger on that oozes from all his films...it is his special fingerprint if you will...I can't explain it but it's there. I have seen all his films from MISSION IMPOSSIBLE at the cinema except REDACTED (it was nowhere to be seen  ) and I am looking forward to seeing PASSION. Bill |

My first De Palma was Carlito's Way, which I rewayced over and over again. The first time I saw a film in theaters that I knew was directed by De Palma, was Mission:Impossible. The first film I awaited for years was Snake Eyes.. Oh boy, and now this wait for Passion - hope it will get a premiere here in Norway soon..
